WHAT IS YOGA?
Yoga is an ancient discipline involving many techniques and exercises for relaxing the mind and body.
The word "Yoga" is a Sanskrit term which means to join or unite.  Yoga is practiced to bring about this union of individual consciousness with universal or divine consciousness.  Yoga is a spiritual practice with physical, mental and spiritual benefits.  Through training the body, breath and mind, students can gradually attain higher levels of self knowledge as well as enjoying a healthy body and calm clear mind.
At Yoga in Edgware I offer a Hatha Yoga programme following the principles of the eight limbs of yoga as taught in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali written between 5000 BC - 300 AD.

The eight limbs of Yoga are:-

1. YAMAS
The Yamas are the ethical attitudes which help the student with his/her relationship with the external world.  They include the practice of non harming, truthfullness, non stealing, moderation and non possessiveness.

2.  NIYAMAS
The Niyamas are practices that lead to wisdom
and knowledge of the Self.  They are observances that channel energy inwards towards self-realisation.  They include the practice of purity, contentment, self discipline, self study and self surrender.

3.  ASANA
Asanas are the postures practiced to build health and self awareness and to prepare the body for meditation.

4.  PRANAYAMA
Pranayama is the use of breathing techniques to gain control and mastery of the breath.  The breath is used to balance the nervous system, improve concentration and expand energy.

5.  PRATYAHARA
Pratyahara is the withdrawal of the senses and attachments to objects and external forces, allowing the mind to focus inward.

6.  DHARANA
Dharana is concentration leading to mental stability and calmness.

7.  DHYANA
Dhyana is meditation, the mind moving into stillness.

8.  SAMADHI
Samadhi is self realisation.  The union with the Real Self.
