WHAT HAPPENS IN A YOGA CLASS?
A Hatha Yoga class has 3 main elements to it.
1. ASANAS
A series of exercises which promote flexibility and strength within the body.
2. PRANAYAMA
Breathing techniques to help improve the circulation of the body's energy.
3. MEDITATION
To relax the body and still the mind.
OTHER ELEMENTS INCLUDE
Relaxation & Centering
My classes usually begin with a cenerting exercise and end with relaxation.
Limbering
Limbering helps to warm up the muscles and joints at the beginning of a class and cool them down at the end.
Puraka
In Pranayama, Puraka is the act of inhalation which should be smooth and deep.
Rechaka
This is a controlled exhalation which should be slow & deep.
Kumbhaka
This is the pause in the breath between the inhale and exhale and before the next inhalation.
Prana
The life force within the body.
Bandhas
These are the three locks in the body which when applied, redirect the flow of prana for the purpose of spiritual awakening.
Mudras
These are hand gestures which help direct prana in many beneficial ways such as healing and cleansing.
Nadis
These are the astral pathways which carry the prana through the physical body.
Chakras
These are the energy centres located in the body.
Kriya
This involves many cleansing techniques.
Mantra
Mantra yoga means "union by voice or sound". This form included the rythmical repetitions of specific sounds, chants or mantras.
